“(un)covered” — personal project, 2025.
Earlier this year, I began to take notice of these covered road signs as seen on my daily commute. At first it was purely a formal fascination. The contrast of the stark black shape against the sky excited the minimalist in me. The material contrast also drew me in. Cold rectangular steel juxtaposed with a black cloak dancing wildly in the wind, desperate to break free.
Photography was/is not easy as these signs are mostly on highways and busy roads. You only get a second or two as you are driving by and stoping in front of one is not really a safe option. Most of these early tests were captured by me while driving close to the shoulder with an iPhone, then later colorized and edited in Photoshop.
The drapery of each sign, once isolated, feels masterfully sculpted by the elements. Each sign, frozen in time, a roadside Michelangelo, Albrecht Dürer or Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
For me the series is all about contrast, gesture, curiosity, secrecy, censorship and self discovery. They are inspired by everything and nothing at all.
